Preparation of Welding Joints

Welding joints

Countless kilometers, of steel pipelines, are installing by industries, every day for civil and industrial uses worldwide. Welding joints have special importance in the welding operation.

Various welding joints and positions are using at different job locations as per site facilities. and various types of welding processes are being applied around the world, all types of welding processes include some specific facts: –

Part of welding joints

Welding joints can be divided into the following parts:

Part of groove weld joints

  • Groove angle
  • Bevel angle
  • Root gap
  • Root face
  • Groove face
  • Job thickness

Part of fillet weld joints

  • Leg of fillet
  • Root of fillet
  • Welding toe
  • Depth of fusion
  • Face of fillet
  • Throat of fillet

Preparation of welding joints

After completing all the above procedures, welding can be performed successfully. Today we will discuss welding joints and their related functions.

Bevel

The base metal is welded through a bevel according to its thickness .using 37.5 degrees of bevel angle and 75 degrees of grove angle.

Root Preparation

During the Preparation of welding joints, the root gap should be 2.5 to 04.00 mm as per job thickness or according to WPS.

Tools for Preparation

Tools for welding joint preparation are as follows:

  • Grinder Machines for making bevels and edges.
  • Measuring tape for cutting the right size of pieces.
  • right angle and level
  • Jack stands
  • Wire brushes or power brushes for cleaning purposes.
  • Gap rod for making proper root gap
  • Chalk/ pencil for marking purposes.
  • file

Type of welding joints

For different types of jobs that require different types of welds joints and welds, here the common Welding joints are discussed.

Common welding joint may be classified as follows:

Edge Joints

Preparation of Welding Joints

In this type of welding joint, two parallel workpieces are joined edge by edge and welded.  For thicker sections of base metal, filler material is added. However, it is not suitable for severe loading subject to stress. It is commonly used for simple work and sheet metal work.

Weld types

  • Bevel-groove weld
  • Square-groove weld or butt weld
  • J-groove weld
  • V-groove weld
  • Edge-flange weld
  • U-groove weld
  • Corner-flange weld

Tee Joints

In this type of welding joint, two pieces are joined at an angle. This type of joint is used more in support, structure, and civil jobs. In this, a pipe or tube is mostly welded on a base plate. The following types of weld can be used for this type of joint.

  • Plug weld
  • Fillet weld
  • Bevel-groove weld
  • Slot weld
  • Flare-bevel-groove weld
  • J-groove weld

Corner joint

In this type of welding joint, the workpiece is joined by placing it on the edge, whose surface is 90 ° from each other. This type of joint is used in both light and heavy thickness of joints.
Corner welding joints are used on the outer edge of the corner, and this type of joint is suitable for the following types of welds

  • Spot weld
  • Fillet weld
  • V-groove weld
  • Square-groove weld or butt weld
  • U-groove weld
  • Bevel-groove weld
  • Flare-V-groove weld
  • J-groove weldPreparation of Welding Joints
  • Corner-flange weld.

Lap joint

This type of welding joint is used to connect two pieces with different thickne

sses.
In the lap joint, 2 workpieces are placed on top of each other in a lap pattern. This joint is suitable types of the following weld

  • Slot weld
  • Plug weld
  • Bevel-groove weld
  • Spot weld
  • Flare-bevel-groove weld
  • J-groove weld

Butt joint

This welding joint is suitable for all types of metals and is used to achieve strong joints. It is welded by keeping both the pieces of the job in the same plane position. The following types of welds Are appropriate.

  • single-V,
  • Double V,
  • single or double-U,
  • Double U
  • J-grooves.
  • square butt
